Profile of Brandon Brooks
My focus has changed somewhat this past year. Previously, my work has primarily focused on social network site use focusing on Facebook. Much of it involved exploring how social network analysis of egocentric networks from Facebook could be used to conceptualize social capital. I'm currently working on a paper with several colleagues on these ideas that we are planning to submit to the journal Social Networks. My focus now is on how Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be used by lower income groups for economic or social benefit. Currently, there appears to be a knowledge gap between less advantaged groups and their use of online tools. SNSs may provide some useful insight, but there are a plethora of other uses of online media and why and how different groups use them. Thus, this next year I will be working on understanding how individuals view their home security on their personal computers or laptops. At first glance this has nothing to do with stratification or economic mobility, but if one thinks about lower income groups who are illegal aliens then it is likely they have much much different security worries than U.S. Citizens making their use of online tools and media more protected.
