About

Welcome to the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media!

Our mission is threefold:

  1. to research, create, and apply information and communication technology and media experiences
  2. to educate the next generation of creators, scholars, and managers
  3. to apply knowledge of communication technology for the benefit of industry and society

We invite students to explore and create digital communication. In this varied department, learners can develop their understanding and knowledge in the fields of visual design (such as web design, 3D and Flash animation), video game design, audio production, television studio and video production. Undergraduate students learn to create not just the presentation of information, but the methods by which it is consumed. These focused objectives build both portfolio pieces and real-world skills. Graduate students gain an in-depth understanding of creative and media events by shaping high-level research and participating in a creative curriculum.

Programs & Courses

Some of our courses target students seeking to become tomorrow’s media designers, skilled at working with both traditional and new media to create compelling content. Other courses prepare students to manage information and communication technologies, and to apply them to enhance the competitiveness of their companies and improve the way their companies interact with customers and other stakeholders. A third area of focus explores questions of policy and the potential societal implications that arise from technological developments and innovations in usage. Students often blend these areas, enabling them to contribute as designers and managers, policy makers, researchers, or future educators in our field. All students are equipped to be informed users of the new media technologies for themselves, for their employers, or when engaged in public service.

Faculty & Research

Our department is made up of an interdisciplinary community of faculty and students, all sharing a common desire to understand and apply media and information technologies for the benefit of society.

Beyond educating, the TISM faculty engage in innovative research in such fields as information dispersal and consumption, usability, human-computer interaction, and policy. This research is performed through a variety of labs and centers, such as the Quello Center for Telecommunication Management and LawGames for Entertainment and Learning Lab; The Online Interaction Lab; and Social Media Research Lab. This allows the faculty to infuse their teaching with the latest, most important information.
